WE SUPPORT THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT
The Black Lives Matter movement regained national attention with the senseless and disturbing murders of Black Americans like Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. The movement began in 2013 in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case and Black communities have been experiencing these acts of violence long before the movement began and far before there were video recordings.
At its core, Black Lives Matter acknowledges that white supremacy was built into systems of power in this country and that Black lives have always been targeted. The movement not only brings awareness to the violence against Black lives and seeks to eradicate white supremacy in our systems of power, but it also creates a space for Black joy and empowerment. The movement also recognizes the intersectionality of these issues and affirms those in the LGBTQ+ community, disabled folks, undocumented folks, and other marginalized groups within the Black community.
